Here is the first discussion question for the Teacher Support Program's book study of Drs. Harry and Rosemary Wong's The First Days of School...
The Wongs share that "the greatest asset of a school is its people." Have you found this to be true? Who ARE these people and how can you create an environment that allows you to capitalize on the successes of these people and create a learning environment in the first weeks/months of school that fosters positive, respectful relationships with these "people?"
Have you found success in forming cohorts of support at your campus? How are you planning on utilizing the tools provided to nurture and support you through your year?
Blog your answers to these questions in the comments below. And respond to two of your classmates comments.
Due Friday, October 16th.
I agree with the quote because it depends on the people and their attitudes and personalities combined in order for a school to function. The people are the teachers, students, and other administrators and parents. If the majority of the people aren't being productive then the school suffers. Everyone has a part to play. In order to create a good respectable and learning environment with all these people would involve starting off with a positive attitude. You need to make sure you know what you are doing and know exactly how you will manage to work with these people. You need to make sure to follow the district's curriculum otherwise, teaching won't be a pleasant experience. Be sure you are flexible and adaptable to these different people you will be working with. Keep listening, just because you teach doesn't mean you stop learning. I've picked up those tips and many more and I hope to apply them in my future as a teacher and as a present future educator.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you friend! 👍👍
DeleteI agree with the fact that the people are the ones that establish a respectful and effective learning environment.
DeleteI like what you said and agree with it completely, you have brilliant wording!
DeleteLove the wording of this. I agree with you completely.
DeleteI absolutely agree with this quote because it's up to the people, which are the students, teachers, parents and administrators to give the school a smooth flow. You create a successful year by starting the first day good. Being positive towards your students, the parents and the rest of the people that work in school, will most likely set that positivity later in the year. The tools I've learned will affect me throughout the year by showing me that to be able to have a good, positive and successful class, I have to start right.
ReplyDeleteI think that's the point.. That the school year depends on the way you present yourself the first couple of weeks of school. If you tend to leave out what you might think is minimal information or logical/obvious rules in the classroom, the class procedures will be at risk. You'll end up being unorganized and with little or no respect as a teacher. You need to be firm and make sure the students not only know your expectations, but how to reach them too.
DeleteI agree with you, having a positive attitude towards your teaching will benefit the rest of the year
DeleteI agree that the most valuable assets to the school are the people. The people being everybody involved in the schools; the teachers, students, staff members, even parent volunteers. Everyone has a huge role to fufill, and if everyone does their part, then the school will be successful. Students, teachers, and staff should know their roles and have a positive learning environment established within the first month of school. To ensure a stable learning environment, teachers and staff must be on the same track with the same game plan in mind. At sites, I have not myself found a community of people to go to, but I'm meeting more people the more I am there. From the people that I've met, they are all extremely helpful and supportive of the communities for teachers.
ReplyDeleteWorking as a community is the perfect way to create a positive environment. Success is obtained with the effort of all.
DeletePeople are the most valuable asset to schools. Working together and efficiently makes it more likely to be successful. I also think that having a positive attitude is very essential to a great learning environment. I just love how you said that we need to be on the same track. This is a very important statement. Teachers should always be working together and have the same I guess goal. To make sure your students are successful!
DeleteTeachers, parents, students, and staff are the the people that make up a school. Like the quote states they are "the greatest asset" all these important people change the life's of students. In order to create a successful environment teachers must establish their expectations the first weeks of school and begin to practice their expectations themselves. To create a respectful environment, teachers have to also be respectful to all staff, students, and parents. By beginning the school year with all expectations set the year will run successfully and have the outcome desired.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I think it has a lot to do with the attitude you have in the beginning in order for the year to run smoothly, especially setting expectations since the start.
DeleteI agree 100% "In order to create a sucessful environment teachers must establish their expectations the first weeks of school and begin to practice their expectations themselves." I like that. Teachers have to learn to teach.
DeleteDefinitely! Students need to have structure as early as possible in the year. If students do not know what is expected of them, they cannot meet these expectations. Likewise, parents should know what habits they need to be reinforcing in their students when they help with or look over homework.
DeletePeople are truly the greatest asset of a school. These people are students, parents, teacher, and administrators. These people influence our students and play a big role in the children's lives. Like the book states students repeat what the person they look up to does. This can be any of these people what they say or do plays a huge role in the education and behavior students exhibit. The most important thing these people have to do is make sure the students are successful. To do this the environment in which students learn must be respectful and kind. The first days of school will determine how successful the year will be according to Wong. This means that the first days are very important. Well what if the teacher doesn't know how to start the first day? Many teachers are taught how to teach once the "ball is rolling" as Wong states. For students to be successful they must have a great environment and inspirational people to look up to. That is why I believe that the greatest asset are people.
ReplyDeleteI love how you pointed out the fact that students repeat behavior. If the teachers, staff, or even parents act like they don't care, the students will mirror this behavior and not care either. It's important that we as role models set a good example for the students.
DeleteI like how you stated that students repeat what someone does, it's important to people that work in the field to know that whatever they do, can affect the students' behavior.
DeleteI agree with Ana that students definitely learn by example, teachers are the golden totem students look to for model behavior. If they don't understand what good behavior looks like they won't know how to exhibit it themselves. In younger students especially parents and teachers need to have a partnership in training kid with how actions should be, and parents can reinforce the learning at home in everyday activities.
DeleteI agree! People are the greatest assest in School. You have the supportive teachers, parents and even some students that make your school great. We are the people who is supposed to guide the children in every possible way we can cause we are like role models. Most kids want to be a teacher or a parent so they are going to take after what we do. So the first day of school is like a first impression you have on someone, like the first day of school is going to determine how the year will go. Will you have a good first day? Will you have a good year? Which is why the people have to stay positive & That is why the people are the greatest assest
ReplyDeleteI find success forming cohorts because I always work better groups, which I think most students do.
I completely agree with you. We are the people who are guiding the children which is why teachers must be careful with what they do or say. Teachers should have a positive attitude so students can feel safe telling a teacher what they need to. It also helps to establish great trust with teachers.
DeleteIt's imperative that students, teachers, and parents understand that they are the most important parts of any school or classroom setting. The students are the sponges that this is all for, they need to understand how important their educations are, the parents need to be understanding and kind and be ready to help them in any way they can. And lastly the teachers need to create a warm, comfortable environment that the students can feel safe in and that they can feel free to ask questions and speak out in. A judge mental class is th same as a room full of bullies. Administration has the important job of making sure rules are followed and punishments are dealt as fairly and firmly as they need to be.
